Located in the heart of Iowa, there is something for everyone in Des Moines. From arts and entertainment to dining and outdoor activities, the city of Des Moines is ever-increasing in popularity. To add to Des Moines’ athletic events, the city is home to the Iowa Cubs, Drake University and the Principal Charity Golf Classic. The community is also known for its numerous festivals, downtown farmer’s market, state fair and a host of cultural events.
The Des Moines Public School District is the largest in Iowa, consisting of 38 elementary schools, eleven middle schools, five high schools (East, Hoover, Lincoln, North and Roosevelt) and ten special schools and programs. Small parts of the city are served by Carlisle Community Schools, Johnston Community School District, the Southeast Polk Community School District and the Saydel School District. Grand View Christian School is the only private school in the city, although Des Moines Christian School in Urbandale, Iowa Christian Academy and Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, and Ankeny Christian Academy on the north side of the metro area serve some city residents.
Des Moines is home to two, four-year private colleges: Drake University and Grand View University. Simpson College, Upper Iowa University and William Penn University have classroom facilities in the area. For-profit colleges with classrooms in the area include the University of Phoenix. Des Moines Area Community College and Des Moines University offer higher learning opportunities in the community as well.
The city is known for its insurance and finance industries, and as a great place to conduct business.
